GIRLS HOOPS: Lady Lions finish sweep of Tidioute, Youngsville falls to Venango Catholic

The Warren County Christian School Lady Lions trailed after one, and were tied going into the half, on Wednesday at Tidioute but rebounded in a third quarter that led to a 39-32 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

After losing to WCCS by 24 earlier this season, Tidioute came out strong in the first half, led by Tanya Krouse who scored eight of her team-high 16 points in the first half.

But the third quarter belonged to WCCS post players Alyssa Kerr and Kaitlin Weidner, who combined for 11 of WCCS’ 14 points in the frame. Weidner scored seven of her game high 18 in the third to put the Lady Lions up 10 heading into the fourth.

Tidioute mounted a late charge in the final minutes, shaving the lead to as few as six, but was unable to overcome the rough third.

WCCS Coach Tom Jones noted that his team was short a couple of players for the contest, including their starting point guard. “Their record may not show it (but they, Tidioute) play hard all the time. I’m glad the girls came out against a difficult situation and got a win.”

WCCS will be back in action on Friday in Jamestown against Jamestown Bethel.

The Youngsville Lady Eagles lost a tough non-region matchup with Venango Catholic, 51-41, Wednesday at Youngsville High School.

It was a mark of improvement for the Lady Eagles after a 56-37 loss to Venango earlier in the season. In that game, the Vikings started with an 18-0 run before Youngsville was able to regroup. On Wednesday, the Eagles trailed by just three points at the half.

“We felt pretty good, and I think offensively, we played much better,” said Youngsville coach Dave Becker. “We face tough opponents and tough shooters, but we played better than we have in a while.”

Kennedy Cratty poured in 20 points to lead Youngsville, while Katie Chuzie added 10. Lindsay Homan scored a game-high 28 for Venango Catholic.

The Lady Eagles will close out the regular season with a pair of Region 3 games, visiting second-place Cochranton on Saturday and first-place Conneaut on Monday.
