Jr. high hoops

Beaty’s eighth-grade boys basketball team finished the season 16-1 with a 2-1 week last week.

Kohl Nosel led Beaty with 11 points and Adam Irwin added seven in a 38-32 loss to J.W. Wilson Middle School on Feb. 1.

Rylan Fitzgerald scored 15 points and Nosel 14 in a 36-25 win over Elk County Catholic Middle School Feb. 3.

Nosel also had 12 points to lead nine scorers in Beaty’s 40-31 win over Oil City Middle School Feb. 6 to end the season.

Wrestling rankings

Heading into this weekend’s District 10 Class AAA Championships at Central Tech High School, Warren junior D.J. Fehlman – at 25-1 – is the top-rated 132-pounder in District 10 Class AAA and the Northwest Region AAA, according to Rob Coleman’s latest wrestling rankings released Tuesday at www.districttenwrestling.com. Fehlman had 92 career wins before Tuesday’s match at McDowell.

In addition to Fehlman, Warren freshman Nick DeSimone (fourth, 126), junior Collin DeLattre (fourth, 138), senior Cody Gunn (third, 182), and junior Alex Streich (third, 220) are also ranked in the district.

The top four in each weight class advance from the D10 tourney to the Northwest Region Class AAA Tournament the following weekend in Altoona.

Gymnastics

Russell’s Jesse Valone competed for the first time in the Diamond Division of Xcel this weekend at the Nickel City Classic at Gymnastics Unlimited in West Seneca, N.Y.

She achieved some new personal bests.

Valone’s scores were: vault 8.55 (2nd place), bars 9.35 (2nd place and new personal-best), beam 8.375 (1st place), floor 9.675 (1st place and new personal-best), and all-around 35.95 (1st place).
