GIRLS HOOPS: Eisenhower loses battle of younger teams

“It was a good game for both young teams,” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue, whose Lady Knights fell 59-50 on Saturday in a non-region game at Eisenhower High School.

“We held the lead in the third quarter, up 33-27 with about 3:15 left, and then we lost the lead around 22:20 left in the third and never got it back,” said Logue, whose Knights are 6-13 overall. Titusville is 4-16.

“Donovan, their post player – we held her to six points in the first half and she ended with 25,” said Logue. “You’ve got to given them credit; they made their foul shots at the end (10-of-14 in the fourth quarter).”

Titusville outscored Eisenhower 41-30 in the second half in a game that featured just one senior, Eisenhower’s Danielle Bradish, who had four steals. Ike sophomore Mallory Trumbull had a season-high in points with 14, and added 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals, as well as guarding Titusville’s point guard, in a breakout performance. Freshman teammate Kirsten Baran had 12 points, 11 rebounds and three steals in the loss.

In a 43-42 loss in overtime in the junior varsity game, Ike’s Haylie Birt hit a 3-pointer to send the game to OT, and she finished with 15 points.

Strong Vincent 65, Warren 53

ERIE – Warren falls to 3-8 in Region 6 after a strong start against Strong Vincent at the Hammermill Center, Gannon University, on Saturday.

Warren led 22-18 after one quarter, but was outscored 18-9 in the second and 9-7 in the third to move to 8-10 overall. Strong Vincent is 12-5 overall and 9-3 in region.

Warren coach Jeff Berdine said the tide started to turn when a couple of Strong Vincent’s big men got into foul trouble and two guards subbed in. He said the Colonels starting pressing and Warren didn’t handle the press.

“We had a slow start in the second quarter,” said Berdine. “We had a stretch of four straight turnovers to start the second quarter, and four straight empty possessions in the third.”

Tanner Stanz and Collin Fantaskey had 11 points each in the loss.

Warren has a bust final week – at Prep Monday, again at Gannon, hosting Corry on Tuesday on senior night, at Fort LeBoeuf on Friday, and possibly at Girard Saturday.

“We want to put ourselves in a position to be a spoiler,” he said.
