Mrs. Viola J. Gourley, 84, of Rte 957, Sugar Grove passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the Rouse Home in Youngsville, PA.

Mrs. Gourley was born in Conewango Valley, NY on June 30, 1929, the daughter of the late Fred and Walza (Brawley) Benson. She served as an elder at the Sugar Grove Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Sugar Grove Presbyterian Church Woman’s Association. She enjoyed traveling to Safety Harbor in Florida during the winter months for many years, and also cooking. She was famous for her macaroni and cheese and her fudge. She worked side by side with her husband James on the dairy farm for 40 + years and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a very devoted homemaker.

She was the wife of James W. Gourley whom she married May 23, 1948 in Sugar Grove, PA. Also surviving are a daughter, Evelyn (Earl) Woodburn of Bear Lake, PA; 4 sons, William (Nancy) Gourley, John Gourley, Gary (Peggy) Gourley all of Sugar Grove, PA, and Paul Gourley of Hendersonville, TN.; a former daughterinlaw, Patti Gourley of Sugar Grove; 18 Grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren on the way, 1 great great granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandaughter, Jamie Sue Woodburn Retterer, 3 sisters, Nellie Ingerson, Dale Egbert, Alice Smith; 3 brothers, George Benson John Benson and Fred. Benson, Jr.; and a special daughterinlaw, Anne Marie Gourley.

Friends will be received on Saturday from 24 & 79 the Sugar Grove Branch of McKinney Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. A funeral and committal service will be held at the Sugar Grove Methodist Church at 2 pm on Sunday, February 9, 2014.

Burial will be private and will be in Turnpike Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to the Sugar Grove Free Library or the Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
