ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (Jan. 31-Feb. 5): Jaykup Durlin

Jaykup Durlin is a fighter. The Youngsville senior is battling through an extremely difficult season, after the death of his father. This week, Durlin – the top-ranked 220-pounder in District 10 Class AA – went 2-0 to improve to 13-2 on the year. Durlin was Reynolds’ only blemish on Saturday on its way to the D10 Class AA Team title, when he earned a pin late in the team match. The night before, or 15 hours before, he earned a first-period pin against Sheffield. This was a week after Durlin had a loud and supportive Youngsville High School crowd help him will his way to a pin just over two days after the death of his father. Durlin, with the help of his head coach Scott Ishman, pictured, and teammates, has certainly showed tremendous character in the face of adversity, and is the Times Observer Male Athlete of the Week, sponsored by McDonald’s.
