General McLane High School senior offensive and defensive lineman Brett Kulka, the son of Sheffield High School graduates Scott and Lorri (Graham) Kulka, and grandson of Judy Graham of Clarendon Heights and Basil and Trudy Kulka of Sheffield, has signed to play defensive end in the fall for Division I Maryland University. He joins numerous cousins who have played Big 10 football, including John and George Kulka of Penn State. Brett’s older brother Eric worked for Penn State football as a team manager and he has a brother Kevin who currently plays for Slippery Rock University. Brett has recently played against his cousin Kyle Kulka, who plays for the Warren Dragons football team. Brett was an all-region, all-district and all-state all-star this past season for General McLane.

According to Maryland’s website, its “sixth commitment for the class of 2014 and second from coach Randy Edsall’s native state of Pennsylvania, Kulka is widely viewed as an under-the-radar prospect, the type of hard worker with whom Edsall likes to round out his recruiting groups. Before committing to Maryland, (Kulka) had offers from Akron, Bucknell, Buffalo and Kent State, according to 247sports.

“Their program and their philosophy and what they do there seemed like a good fit for me,” Kulka said, via the Baltimore Sun. “I looked like a good fit for what they had going and I’m hoping I can help them out.”

Sheffield High School senior Brandon Kipp is the first Warren County player to be announced as a member of team Pennsylvania in the 2014 Don Raabe Big 30 Charities Classic August 2 in Bradford. He is a running back and linebacker.
