BOYS HOOPS: East tops Warren

ERIE-Warren’s playoff hopes took another hit on Thursday with a 79-59 loss to Erie East at East High School.

The Dragons are now 8-9 overall and 3-7 in Region 6. East remains at the top of the standings with a 16-3 overall record and a 10-1 region mark.

“When you play the best team in the region, you’ve got to play your best game,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “Two things we didn’t do well is rebound and get back on transition defense. We knew going in that we had to do that against a team like East, and we didn’t execute the game plan very well. Offensively, we moved the ball well and knocked down open shots. The kids never quit, we just got in too much of a hole early on.”

Tanner Stanz led the Dragons with 18 points, while Evan Suppa and Scott Vasilisin scored eight each.

Warren’s junior varsity was defeated in overtime for the second straight game, 54-50. Jason Waterfield led with 21 points and Ryan Skerda chipped in 17.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Dragons on Saturday, as they return to Erie to take on Strong Vincent at Gannon University. Junior varsity action begins at noon with varsity to follow.
