BOYS HOOPS: Win column: Eagles hold off Tidioute for first win of season

For a game with only two lead changes, it was exciting.

Youngsville notched its first win of the season in thrilling fashion, 57-56 over Tidioute Monday night at Tidioute Community Charter School. The Eagles are now 1-16 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-11.

“It was a very good game. Both teams battled hard the whole way,” said Youngsville coach Jim Kesterholt. “This was a big step forward for us. I know a lot of people look down on Tidioute, but they have some very good ballplayers. Ben Kightlinger had us on our heels the whole game, but our guys never gave up. It’s good to get the first win, and I’m proud of our JVs too. They played a great game.”

Tidioute is 0-8 against Youngsville since becoming a charter school.

The last time a Tidioute Bulldogs team beat the Eagles was 13 years ago, but this was a close call.

The Eagles led a tight game most of the way and threatened to pull away at the end of the third quarter, but Tidioute jumped back into the game courtesy of an and-1 from Kightlinger and a two from Brian Faulkner to cut the lead to two points. The Bulldogs kept the momentum rolling at the start of the fourth with a three-pointer from Faulkner, and took their first lead of the game on a bucket from Kightlinger.

The two teams traded baskets throughout the final quarter until Youngsville tied things up with a Logan Morrison layup and retook the lead on a James Frazier foul shot. Frazier then picked up a big steal on the defensive end to give Youngsville the ball with under 30 seconds left to play, and the Eagles were able to drain enough of the clock to hold Tidioute’s chances to a half-court shot from Kightlinger, which was off the mark.

Collin Lehnen paced the Eagles with 21 points, and Frazier chipped in nine. Kightlinger scored a game-high 26, Faulkner added 14, and Travis McLaughlin finished with 13 for Tidioute.

Both teams will stay in the county for their next game, as the Bulldogs travel to Warren County Christian School on Wednesday and Youngsville heads to Eisenhower on Saturday for a Region 3 matchup with the Knights.

The Eagles claimed a more dominant win in the junior varsity contest, 46-2. Trevor Flinn scored 10 points, while Joey Chuzie and Dakota Buchanan added six each.
