BOYS HOOPS: Knights grab region win over Conneaut; Girard tops Warren

Eisenhower picked up its sixth region win of the year in a close battle with Conneaut, defeating the visiting Eagles by a score of 53-44 Friday night at Eisenhower High School.

Holding just a three-point lead at the half, Ike went on a run and outscored Conneaut 19-11 in the third quarter. The Knights are now 11-5 overall and 6-2 in Region 3.

“It was a tough night, but we kept grinding away,” said Eisenhower coach Dave Allenson. “We actually didn’t play that well, but the kids stayed after it and the hustle paid off; I think we wore them down a little bit.”

Casey Vincent led the Knights with 13 points, Tre Frank added nine, and Jarrett Johnson eight. Eisenhower received a boost with the return of senior Alex Johnson, who had been out with an injury suffered during football season.

The Knights remain in second place in Region 3, and take on first-place Cochranton on Tuesday. The Cardinals are 14-3 overall with an undefeated 8-0 region mark.

Ike was defeated in the junior varsity game, 44-25. Grant Venman and Jake Harvey each had six points in the loss.

Girard 45, Warren 35

Warren couldn’t keep its three-game Region 6 winning streak alive against Girard Friday night, falling to the Yellow Jackets by a score of 45-35 at Warren Area High School.

The Dragons drop to 8-7 overall with a 3-5 region mark. They sit at sixth in the standings – one game behind Harbor Creek – while Girard trails Strong Vincent for second place by a half game.

“They (Girard) make you play ugly,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “In a close game like that there are a lot of key possessions. Joe Dunn’s three at the end of the second quarter put us on the chase, and we came out sloppy with the ball in the second half. We just didn’t make they key plays when we needed them.”

Collin Fantaskey led the Dragons with 15 points, while Scott Vasilisin and Jacoby Passmore added eight each. Vasilisin and Fantaskey each grabbed three rebounds, and Fantaskey notched a pair of steals and a pair of blocks, defensively.

Dunn led all scorers with 16 points for the Yellow Jackets (10-5, 5-2).

Warren’s push for the playoffs will hit full swing next week, as the Dragons travel to McLane on Tuesday, East on Thursday, and Strong Vincent on Saturday. Warren would likely have to jump one of those teams in the standings to make the postseason.

The Dragons were defeated in the junior varsity game, 48-30. Ryan Skerda led with nine points, Devin Nowacki had seven, and Jason Waterfield had six.
