My son, Eric Scheid, who lives in Pleasant Township, was good enough to send me the January 22 Times Observer with the obituary and moving story by Rob Anderson about the passing of Dave Whipple. He was my former student.
I knew and taught Dave when he was a student at Westminster College from 1968 – 1972. Rob’s story about the fine character traits of this man reminded me of his many contributions to the college radio station and the broadcasting program during his student days. Dave wasn’t just an exceptional man when he got to Warren, he showed the same kind of character and leadership in his young manhood.
On my visits to my son we frequently went to the Elks Club where we sometimes ran into Dave. The two of us got together over a beer and laughed about old names and old times. It is something I will keep forever as a cherished memory.
It always disappoints me that we seem to wait until a person is dead to say wonderful things about them. The Warren area has lost a great man and Westminster College has lost a great alumnus. What more can be said except God rest his soul.
