BOYS HOOPS: Knights win at Bradford with late free throw

BRADFORD -Jarrett Johnson hit 1-of-2 free throws with seconds left to give Eisenhower a 48-47 non-region win over Bradford on Monday.

The Knights missed two free throws with a half minute left in a tie game, but Johnson got the rebound and was fouled. After he missed the second free throw, Bradford was awarded the loose ball, but couldn’t get up a good shot with four seconds left.

Elk County Catholic 61, Sheffield 44

A slow start doomed Sheffield against one of the top teams in District 9, as the Wolverines fell by a score of 61-44 to Elk County Catholic Monday at Sheffield High School.

The state-ranked Crusaders (15-2) jumped out to a 20-9 lead after one quarter of play before the Wolverines (4-14) regrouped, playing nearly even basketball the rest of the way.

“I have nothing bad to say about the way we played tonight,” said Sheffield coach Tony Richards. “I’m proud of the kids. If we rebound a little better and make a few of the bunnies, it’s a completely different game.”

Sheffield’s Adam Higby poured in a game-high 19 points, Jake Johnson had 10, and Jimmy Vile added eight. Cory Huff led Elk County with 16 points in the win.

Sheffield’s junior varsity team was defeated by the Crusaders, 68-28. Johnson was the top scorer for the Wolverines with 12 points.

The Wolverines will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Brockway in an AML crossover game at Sheffield High School.
