BOYS HOOPS: Youngsville, Sheffield suffer boys basketball losses

Youngsville quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their varsity basketball game against Maplewood on Friday night, but the Tigers proceeded to go on a 9-0 run and take a lead that they would not relinquish in a 58-38 win over the Eagles at Youngsville High School.

The Eagles shaved the Maplewood lead to as little as four in the second quarter but Maplewood took the lead back into double digits heading into the break, 32-22.

The deficit hovered around 10 until the fourth, when Maplewood outscored the Eagles 16-6.

The Eagles fall to 0-15 with the loss.

Colin Lehnen led Youngsville in scoring, finishing as the lone Eagle in double figures with 18 points.

Head Coach Jim Kesterholt said that “building a program takes time… The kids give me all they have every time out.”

He said that he told his team in the locker room after the game that, even in defeat, they are setting a precedent for the future of the program with their work ethic and effort. While they may not come this year, “if you put the work in, the wins will come,” he said.

Maplewood also won an exciting junior varsity contest by a final score of 48-46.

Joey Chuzie paced the Eagles with 20 points and Brady Kesterholt also finished in double figures with 10.
