WRESTLING: Tragedy and Triumph: Youngsville senior Durlin honors late father with win
Iroquois traveled to Youngsville for a high school wrestling match on Wednesday night.
The Eagles won 54-17.
But the match wasn’t really about wrestling at all.
It was about a community wrapping their arms around an athlete that just lost his father.
And about that athlete getting back on the mat.
Youngsville senior, and returning state qualifier, Jaykup Durlin won his match via pin in 1:03 amid chants of his name from an outstanding, supportive crowd. The victory comes just two days after his father, Darwin, passed away in a house fire at the family’s Barton Run Road residence.
During introductions at the beginning of the match, wrestlers are announced and then come to the center of the mat to shake hands with their upcoming opponent.
When Durlin was called, his opponent came, met him, and gave him a hug. The entire Iroquois team followed.
On the mat, Youngsville took control early, going up 12-0 on pins by Nathan Lehman (113) and Chandler Flinn (120). From then on, the result of the match was never in doubt. In addition to Durlin, Chester Ciukaj, Tanner Burns, Zack Ishman, Jeremy Lyon and Austin Spear also won by pin.
The Region 3 win pushes the Eagles region record to 6-2.
After the match, Coach Scott Ishman spoke in glowing terms of the support that Darwin Durlin had provided to the wrestling program as well to each of the wrestlers.
His memory was celebrated on Wednesday.
“That’s what they were wrestling for,” Ishman said. He explained he did not have to motivate his team to wrestle well tonight because the Eagles “had all the motivation to win.”
Ishman said that having Durlin with the team on Wednesday “was a surprise… but it helped him.”
He added that he was proud of Durlin for wrestling and said that Darwin would have told Jaykup to go wrestle.
“We honor him with this win,” Ishman added.
Ishman also wanted to recognize Iroquois, not only for the show of affection toward Durlin, but also for a donation that they made for the Durlin family.
Similar gestures were undertaken across the county. A collection for the family was taken during the wrestling match at Warren Area High School and the money raised through the 50/50 raffle at Sheffield will also be donated to the Durlins.
The Eagles hit the road next for a Friday match against Saegertown.
