Sports Briefly: 01/20/14


The Warren County Ladies Tournament is being held at Bowlaway Lanes. The following are the leaders in each event after the first week-end of tournament play:

Team: Mom & Girls 2 (Barb Sopkin, Kellie Johnson, JoAnn Lauffenburger and Patti DiPenti) is currently in first place with a handicap score of 2,615. In second place is The Over the Hill Gang (Barb Boutelle, Hazel Grimm, Joyce Olson and Della Highhouse) with a score of 2,414.

Doubles: Hazel Grimm and Joan Jenkins are leading that event with a handicap score of 1,349. In second place are Sue Uhron and Amy Tipton with a score of 1,245.

Singles: Hazel Grimm is the leader of this class with a handicap score of 690, and Deanna Kuzminski is in second place with a score of 674.

The tournament will run through next weekend with the Doubles and Singles Events being bowled on Saturday openings are available on both squad times of 2p.m. and 6 p.m. The Team Event will be on Sunday – openings are still available at 11 a.m.

Jr. high hoops

Beaty’s eighth-grade boys basketball team defeated Eisenhower, 52-35, on Thursday. Kehl Nosel scored 15 points, Elliot Gross and Andrew Davidson had 12 points each in the win, Ryan Fitzgerald six, Mitchell Bryant five, and Colby Johnson a bucket.

For Eisenhower, Hagberg had 10, Jayden Hayes nine, Zach Fincher and Nick Smelko four each, Troy Myer three and Passinger two.

Beaty also defeated Corry, 44-31. Fitzgerald had 13 points, Nosel and Davidson scored 11 each for Beaty, Gross four, Adam Irwin and Bryan two each and Matt Leonard had one point.


Jesse Valone competed at Jacquie Hirsch’s Memorial Buffalo Challenge in Getzville, N.Y., this weekend. The proceeds of the meet are donated to a fund to fight cancer.

Valone’s scores were: vault 8.60, bars 9.15 (2nd place), beam 9.55 (1st place), floor 8.65 (8th place), all-around 35.95 (4th place). Her beam score was a personal-best. She competed in the platinum division of Xcel. Jesse trains at Stroup’s Gymnastics.

College news

Warren Area High School graduate Kelsey Nuhfer was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.50 seconds on Saturday for California University of Pa. at Lynn College in Boca Rotan, Fla.
