BOYS HOOPS: Eisenhower, Sheffield win

A 23-6 third quarter wiped out a one-point deficit and sent the Eisenhower Knights boys basketball team well on its way to a 10-point win over Cambridge Springs on Tuesday night at Eisenhower Middle High School.

Cambridge Springs had a one point lead, 16-15, over the Knights after one quarter before playing to a 17-17 tie in the second. For Cambridge Springs, Austin Porter scored 13 of his team’s 17 second quarter points and had a total of 27 going into the break.

But a defensive shift limited Porter to just three points in the rest of the game as the Knights took control in the third.

“It was a struggle,” Coach Dave Allenson said. “They are a good team. They were quick. They gave us a lot of problems with their penetration especially in the first half.” He said Cambridge Springs successfully got inside of the Knights defense and was able to generate second-chance points.

Asked what changed between the second quarter and the third, Allenson said “sometimes (it is) just (having) the right kids on the floor” at the tight time. Allenson acknowledged that Porter “was killing us in the first half” he noted “We had Chris Sanders guard him the rest of the game and he had one three-pointer the rest of the game. That made a big difference.”

Eisenhower’s Tre Frank matched Porter’s 20 total points on the night in the victory. Sanders also finished in double figures with 16 points. In addition to seven points, Kyle Hunt shared the rebound lead with Sanders at eight apiece. Casey Vincent chipped in six assists in the win, as well.

Eisenhower’s next game will be a road trip to Maplewood on Friday.

The Sheffield Wolverines used a 23 to 11 second quarter to run away from the Tidoute Community Charter School Bulldogs in boys varsity basketball action on Tuesday night in Tidoute.

Sheffield took an early five-point lead after the first but dominated the second quarter, outscoring Tidioute by 12, to take a lead that would stand up.

“We just got beat inside,” said TCCS Coach Dave Manning, who noted that Sheffield had 15 offensive rebounds that turned into 22 points in the paint.

“If you take those away… this game is a completely different one,” he said. “We need to get something figured out… boxing out and getting our big guys underneath before we are going to be successful.”

The Bulldogs will play next on Friday when they welcome Rocky Grove to Tidioute. Sheffield is also back in action on Friday, slated for a road game against DuBois Central Catholic.
