BOYS HOOPS: East pulls away from Warren

Warren will have to wait at least one more game before notching its first Region 6 victory.

A 32-point effort from Collin Fantaskey wasn’t enough for the Dragons, as they fell to Erie East, 77-61, on Monday night at Warren Area High School.

The Dragons (5-5 overall, 0-3 in Region 6) led after the first quarter, and trailed by just two points at halftime, but the Warriors (8-2, 3-1) went on an 11-2 run to start the second half and led the rest of the way.

“It’s the same story we’ve talked about for the past two weeks,” Warren coach Jeff Berdine said. “You have to be able to get stops when you need to. Without playing good defense, we’re just not going to win games. Everyone we play is as good or better that us.”

East’s size allowed them to control the boards, and the Warriors cashed in on several second-chance opportunities throughout the game.

Kyree Kirkland and Justus Davis would combine to score 51 of East’s 77 points.

Warren was able to get within six points on several occasions in the second half, but Berdine noted that the team seemed too urgent on offense when they had plenty of time left.

“We didn’t do a good job getting into our sets when we needed to,” Berdine said.

Fantaskey had five assists to go along with his 32 points, and Jacoby Passmore hauled in ten rebounds. Tanner Stanz chipped in 11 points.

Warren’s junior varsity team won its match, 53-47. Ryan Skerda led the way with 15 points, and Logan Galloway added 12.

The Dragons will host Strong Vincent in another region matchup on Friday.
