aGirl Scouts cookie proceeds fuel summer activities
Winter is far from over, but for Girl Scouts selling cookies in the Warren region, the fun and sun of summer are just a few more cases of cookies away.
Many Girl Scouts use the proceeds they earn from the annual Cookie Program to experience summer adventures at GSWPA’s nine camps. Girl Scout camps feature the high-adventure activities that girls love in a safe, secure environment with professional staff.
While many know that camping is an important Girl Scout tradition, few are aware that any girl in grades K-12 can attend Girl Scout camp. Girls do not have to currently be in a troop to make new friends and experience new things at Girl Scout camp.
Two nearby camps offer plenty of opportunities for girls to have summer adventures they’ll remember forever.
Camp Hawthorne Ridge is located in Fairview Township, Erie County. The camp has 207 beautiful acres with a variety of housing options – tents, cabins and lodges. Hawthorne Ridge is a great place for new or less-experienced campers looking to develop their outdoor skills.
The camp’s amenities-the gorge, hiking trails, pool with slide, playing field and archery range-provide a progressive outdoor education and experience that prepares younger girls to take on the more challenging programs offered at Camp Singing Hills.
Camp Singing Hills is located in Venango County, between Franklin and Oil City, in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains and near the confluence of the Allegheny River and Oil Creek. The 221-acre camp is GSWPA’s high-adventure camp, challenging girls in archery, target shooting, high and low ropes and canoeing.
This camp is ideally suited for older girls who are ready to take on new physical and mental challenges, individually or with their troop.
Singing Hills has beautiful wooded hiking trails and a lovely outdoor amphitheater with a picturesque babbling brook running alongside. Summer camp accommodations are in tents with either bunks or cots.
For girls who are not currently Girl Scouts, but who are interested in giving Girl Scouts and camp a try, Me and My Gal and Me and My Guy camp programs let girls and their parents experience the fun of Girl Scouting together.
For these unique programs, girls bring mom or dad (or an aunt, uncle, grandma or grandpa) with them to camp for a two night stay. Together they will enjoy hiking, canoeing, archery, swimming, and adventure courses. Girl Scout traditions like campfires, s’mores and skits are also part of the experience. Not only do girls love to have fun with mom or dad, but parents also enjoy acting like a kid for a weekend!
Both Hawthorne Ridge and Singing Hills offer Me and My Gal and Me and My Guy programs this summer. To see dates, descriptions and to register, visit gswpa.org/camps.
There are many more programs and opportunities awaiting girls at Girl Scout camp this summer. S’more Magazine lists all the camps and programs available throughout the GSWPA council. Visit gswpa.org and click on the S’more Magazine cover to see what summer has in store in 2014.
