Several months ago I wrote a letter to the editor entitled “Marriage Equality. Be Careful What You Wish For.” I was viciously attacked on-line for defending traditional marriage. Under the guise of marriage equality, same sex “marriage” appears to becoming more and more accepted. On one of his visits to America Pope John Paul II declared, “Vast sectors of society are confused about what is right and what is wrong and are at the mercy of those with the power to create opinion and impose it on others.”
Throughout history every human society has recognized that there is a public interest in recognizing and regulating the only kind of relationship that brings children into the world. Now, it seems, that the changing definition of marriage will open the door for other relationships to demand the same entitlements and protection of law as marriage between one man and one woman.
The door is opening. In Utah the Federal District Court has ruled in favor of a polygamous family shown on the TV reality show “Sister Wives”. The judge ruled that it is legal for a person to live as though they are married to more than one spouse so long as only one of them has legal status. While this does not create legally binding plural marriages, it is the next step in changing the traditional definition of marriage into an institution that recognizes intimate, romantic relationships between consenting individuals.
As society continues to depart from the natural definition of marriage, same sex “marriage, polygamy, First cousins, man-boy, girl-woman relationships will have a legal foundation protected from criminal consequences. Marriage equality taken to its logical end further weakens society, erodes the basic family unit and increases the decline of the birth rate. It”s happening now. Is that what you want?
