WRESTLING: Back points: Sheffield ends drought vs. Port Allegany

Sheffield topped Port Allegany for the first time in, at least, nine years dating back to 2004-05 Thursday night, 40-33 at Sheffield High School.

History hasn’t been kind of the Wolverines. In 2007-08, Port Allegany topped Sheffield 84-0. The next year, the Gators walked away with a 78-0 victory.

Thursday, however, came down to the last match.

“That’s happened to us a few times this year,” said Sheffield (6-8) coach Jack Rice. “We’re kind of used to it. Whoever’s the one before the starting match-whoever’s going to be the last match-kind of figures it’s going to come down to the wire, they have to bring their ‘A’ game and go get it.”

Tonight that last match was Dakota Schooler against Jessie Rush in the 170-pound matchup. Schooler finished up the night with a pin at 4:41.

“It was a great team effort,” Rice said. “Some kids fell a little short tonight and the other kids picked them right back up. That’s what we’ve been really working on in practice. Working hard, wrestling hard, and wrestling all three periods-wrestle to the whistle. That’s what the boys did tonight and they came out on top.

“The boys really did well tonight. I’m very proud of them.”
