BOYS HOOPS: Dragons 0-2 in region; TCCS boys win

The difference in Thursday night’s Region 6 match-up came from beyond the arc.

When all was said and done, General McLane buried 11 3-pointers and the Dragons were unable to hit any as the Lancers went on to win by a score of 76-55 at Warren Area High School.

“We felt that that’s how they were going to score their points,” said Dragons’ coach Jeff Berdine. “We gave a very poor defensive effort on the perimeter. Most of their points came off of dribble penetration when we had to step up and help because guys got beat. General McLane always plays hard, and we didn’t match their intensity tonight.”

With the loss, Warren is now 5-4 overall and 0-2 in Region 6. McLane improves to 7-2 overall with a 2-0 region mark.

The visitors held an 11-point lead at the half, and caught fire early in the third quarter as they outscored Warren 23-13 in the frame.

“We needed to come out with a spark in the third. We didn’t, and they put the game away,” added Berdine.

Collin Fantaskey paced the Dragon attack with 20 points, while Jacoby Passmore added 10.

McLane’s Cullen McKissock scored a game-high 21 and Lukas Hallett chipped in 17 to lead the Lancers.

The Dragons will continue to look for their first region win on Monday, when they welcome Erie East to Warren Area High School.

Warren used a 23-point third quarter to pull away in the junior varsity game, going on to win by a score of 69-58. Ryan Skerda scored 17 points to lead the Dragons, Jason Waterfield had 15, and Scott Vasilisin had 14.

TCCS 46, Jamestown Bethel 36

Tidioute Charter snapped a 10-game losing streak dating back to last year with a 46-36 win over Jamestown Bethel at home.

“It was a nice first win for us,” said Tidioute coach Dave Manning, whose Bulldogs 1-7. “It was really what we needed and the time we needed it.”

Manning cited the guard play from Brian Faulkner (17 points) and Ben Kightlinger (21 points) and their ability to knock down open shots, as well as the effort from “the big men,” as highlights in the game.

“I’ve been asking for them to show more hustle and heart and they did that tonight. It helped out tonight,” said Manning.

“We have Rocky Grove and Sheffield coming up and neither game is going to be easy,” Manning said. “We have to play better than we did tonight.”

Tidioute took the JV game as well with a 28-5 final.
