GIRLS HOOPS: Sheffield, Youngsville fall in weekend hoops action

DUKE CENTER-The Lady Wolverines’ bid for a first-place finish in the Otto-Eldred Holiday Tournament fell short as they were defeated by the host Terror on Saturday evening, 52-38.

“It was disappointing that the girls didn’t play they way they have been. We just didn’t seem to have the confidence and drive to play the game like I know we can,” said Sheffield coach Jaimie Ely. “They let (Otto-Eldred’s Anna Colebert and Melody Young) control the game and we ran into issues just trying to get on our own side of the court. We’ve had a lot of injuries and players out of games early in the season so far. I’m optimistic that following our time off now we can work on getting back to one-hundred percent and be ready for the rest of our season and improve our record.”

Young and Colebert accounted for 44 of the Terror’s 52 points.

Jen Isenberg was the high-scorer with 16 points for the Lady Wolverines, Tierra Hansen had 11, and Abby Cromwell added nine.

For their efforts this weekend, Isenberg and Hansen were named to the all-tournament team.

Portville defeated Oswayo Valley in the consolation game, 48-40.

Sheffield (2-5) will return from the break on Jan. 2 at Johnsonburg.

Conneaut 63, Youngsville 35

Coming off a tough loss to Commodore Perry Tuesday night, the Youngsville girls fell to Conneaut, 63-35, Saturday afternoon at Youngsville High School.

“We had close to 30 turnovers,” Youngsville coach David Becker. “I know we had a couple people not here, but we just can’t do that.”

Kennedy Cratty led the team with 22 of the team’s 35 points. Karissa Cratty picked up eight, while Jessie Jameson and Aubree Hendrickson both had two.

“We fixed some things from the other night and then we had 30 turnovers. It’s not going to help us. We have to get that fixed or we’re going to have a long season,” Becker said.

Youngsville also dropped the JV game 42-10, picking up just a single point in both the second and third quarters. Ali Ishman led the team with four points with Hannah Bulard right behind with 3 and Aspen Flinn with two.
