BOYS HOOPS: Season’s Greetings: Warren lights up Bradford for 4-1 start

The Dragons opened Friday night’s non-region game against Bradford on a 12-0 run, and went on to win by a score of 76-41 in front of the home crowd at Warren Area High School to improve to 4-1 on the year.

Warren led 18-2 after one quarter of play and started the second half in the same fashion with a 27-5 advantage over the Owls, who struggled to break through the Dragons’ full-court defense for the majority of the game.

“I actually thought we started a little slow tonight. I thought after how poorly we played at McDowell we would come out a little sharper,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “Coming out after the half with a 27-5 third quarter was huge for us.”

Jake McBride continued his strong play in his first season in a Dragon uniform with a 17-point effort to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks. Collin Fantaskey added 10 points and three assists, Jacoby Passmore had 10 points, and Tanner Stanz added nine.

Warren utilized a deep bench with 11 players finding the scoresheet.

The Dragons will open this year’s St. Bonaventure Tournament on Dec. 26 against Olean (N.Y.) at 8:30 p.m.

Warren also won big in the junior varsity game, 61-22. Logan Galloway and Ryan Skerda led the Dragons with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Eisenhower 73, Sheffield 36

The Eisenhower Knights picked up a win over Sheffield in a county-clash Friday at Eisenhower High School, 73-36.

The Knights are now 4-1 overall, while the Wolverines fall to 2-4.

“We forced a lot of turnovers, passed really well, got a lot of open shots, and shot a high percentage,” said Eisenhower coach Dave Allenson. “County games are always a rivalry but really, we just played so much better than the other night against Corry.”

Four different players found themselves in double digits for Ike, topped by Tre Frank’s 15 points. Casey Vincent, Jarrett Johnson, and Kyle Hunt each had 11.

Jake Johnson and Nic Confer were the high-scorers for Sheffield with eight points each.

Eisenhower also won the junior varsity game, 39-31. Jake Harvey scored 13 points for the Knights, while Sheffield’s Jake Johnson led all scorers with 26.

The Wolverines will open their own Christmas Tournament next Friday, Dec. 27, while Ike looks for revenge against Corry in the opening round of the Corry Holiday Tournament on Dec. 26. The Beavers handed the Knights their only loss of the season on Wednesday.

“I thought we would beat (Corry) the first time, so you can’t always go by what I say,” said Allenson. “We’re just looking to play a better game. I’ll be happy if we play like we’re capable of, win or lose.”
