BOYS HOOPS: Dragons, Knights suffer first losses

ERIE-The Warren boys were handed their first loss of the season at the hands of McDowell, 74-30, Wednesday at McDowell High School.

The Trojans jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the non-region game and outscored the Dragons 26-8 in the first quarter.

“Their guards dictated the game,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “We were very undisciplined on offense and defense. They have been waiting for us ever since last year’s game in Warren (a Dragon win). We expected their best shot, and we got it.”

Jake McBride was the leading scorer for the Dragons with 10 points to go along with eight rebounds. Collin Fantaskey pitched in six points, five rebounds and four assists.

Warren (3-1) will host Bradford on Friday.

The Dragons defeated McDowell in the junior varsity game, 46-42. Sheldon McMeans scored 11 points, Scott Vasilisin scored 10, and Ryan Skerda added nine.

Corry 57, Ike 43

Corry beat Eisenhower, 57-43, on Wednesday to hand the Knights their first loss of the year.

Rebounding was Eisenhower’s downfall.

“They just killed us on the boards,” said Eisenhower coach Dave Allenson, whose Knights are 3-1 in the non-region loss. “No question about it. They may have had more second-chance shots than we had first-chance.”

The first half was close for the two teams with both the first and second quarter ending with five-point differences, but starting in the third quarter, Corry pulled away to solidify their win.

“We didn’t play as a team tonight,” said Allenson. “We, for some reason, didn’t have it together. We got out-rebounded and we didn’t play as well as we could have.”

Casey Vincent hit both of Eisenhower’s 3-pointers, while Tre Frank led the team with 14 points.

Ike’s JV also fell to Corry, 47-26.

Otto-Eldred 32, Sheffield 28

Sheffield overcame a 20-9 halftime deficit to take a 25-24 lead in the third quarter, but couldn’t hang on in a 32-28 loss to visiting Otto-Eldred.

“We didn’t attack their holes in their zones, and had a lot of turnovers in the first half,” said Sheffield assistant coach Brandon Troutman. “We missed five buckets in the paint in the first half. The second half we kind of had a fire lit under (us). We had a nice third quarter. (Nic) Confer and Travis Peterson his 3-pointers late in the third quarter that brought us close.”

Trailing 24-13, Confer and Peterson brought it to 24-19. In the fourth quarter, Confer’s third 3-pointer of the game gave Sheffield a 25-24 lead that was short-lived.

Otto took the lead back for good a possession later.

“We had a couple chances in the last 30 seconds (of the game),” said Troutman. “If we could put four quarters together consistently, we’d come away with a lot more W’s.”

Confer finished with 13 points for Sheffield – at Eisenhower on Friday, and Jimmy Vile added seven points and seven rebounds.
