Lady Lions pick up first win in New-Penn rout

Warren County Christian School split a pair of New Penn Christian Conference varsity basketball games against Erie First on Tuesday, winning the girls contest by a score of 76-8, and losing the boys game, 39-35.

Nine different players got on the scoresheet for the Lady Lions in their blowout win, with junior Alyssa Kerr leading the way pouring in 18 points. Kaitlin Weidner and Dymphee Zortman each scored 10, and Caitlin McCall and McKenna Phelps added eight each.

“The girls played very well,” said WCCS coach Tom Jones. “We tried to do some different things tonight and they were able to accomplish those things. Overall, they all played a good game. Everyone got a chance to play and most got a chance to score.”

Despite a loss in the boys game, Jones said it was his team’s “best effort of the season so far.”

“We were missing four players, but the boys hustled tremendously and did a good job rebounding. Hopefully they can keep improving.”

Sophomore Eric Sorensen led the way for the Lions with 15 points – including a 9-of-13 performance from the free throw line. Dan Lauffenburger finished with 10 points on the night.

The boys junior varsity team lost, 32-12. Ethan Kerr scored six, and Lauffenburger scored four points in the loss.

Both teams will be back in action next Tuesday, when they travel to Erie Bethel.
