Tidioute First United Methodist Church has joined with Grace United Methodist Church in Warren, as well as Otterbein, Corry First and Tionesta United Methodist Church, to do a Christmas sermon series entitled “socks and underwear”.
It is all about not getting the gift you wanted but rather the gift that you need.
For the early Jews, the messiah coming as a baby in a manger was not what they wanted, but exactly what we needed.
The idea of hanging socks on the tree in the foyer come from Pastor Kevin Haley at Grace United Methodist Church.
The idea is to have folks bring in or drop off new pairs of socks and underwear, during the Advent season. They will then donate all of the items to local clothing ministries such as Goodwill and Love Inc. This is because “used” items of this sort can not be donated and new items are rarely sent in, plus it will keep fresh in our mind the gift that we all needed this Christmas Season.
