GIRLS HOOPS: Lady Eagles fall to Port Allegany in final

Port Allegany was too much for Youngsville to handle in the championship game of the Sheffield Sports Boosters Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday night, as the Gators came away with a 36-22 victory.

The Eagles struggled in the opening quarter, with Karissa Cratty converting the team’s only field goal, and the Gators jumped out to an 8-3 lead.

After trailing by 10 at halftime, Youngsville hung tough with Port Allegany, but was never able to put together a run to get back into the game.

Kennedy Cratty led the Eagles with 11 points, while her twin sister Karissa finished with nine.

“(Port Allegany) is the number-two team in District 9,” Eagles coach Dave Becker said. “We hung with them. We missed a bunch of layups early, and if that doesn’t happen it’s a totally different game.”

The Eagles (1-1) jump right back into action on Monday, when they travel to Venango Catholic.

Eisenhower 56, Sheffield 44

Eisenhower overcome a game-high 32 points from Sheffield’s Jen Isenberg with a balanced team effort in a 56-44 consolation game win on Saturday at the Sheffield Tournament.

Seven Knights scored in a 21-11 third quarter after a 19-19 halftime tie.

Isenberg scored all 11 Sheffield points that quarter.

“We knew she was going to score… we wanted to make (it difficult for her, and make others step up to beat us),” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. “I thought we turned up our defense a little bit in the third quarter. We got a couple turnovers that led to some baskets, allowing us to open up a little bit of a lead.”

Holly Chapman had 13 points and five rebounds for Ike, Danielle Bradish added five rebounds, and Mallory Trumbull six steals.
