Toys for Tots

AMVETS Post 50 in Sugar Grove is hosting Toys for Tots spaghetti dinner on Sunday, Dec. 1 from noon until 5 p.m. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children

AMVETS and AMVETS Commander Hitchcock invite you come and support the fundraising event and donate a toy to a child. All donations and proceeds stay in Warren County under the direction of the Marine Corp. League.

Christmas

The Sugar Grove Community will hold its 5th Annual Christmas Walk on Friday, Dec. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be live music from a Barbershop quartet, the EMHS Orchestra, and carols provided throughout town by the EMHS Fantasia Choir and the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church.

Our stores will be open and local organization will be participating, each with its own activities or events including living windows, live nativity scenes, art exhibits from our local grade school and high school, costume characters throughout the town, face painting, temporary tattoos, contests and drawings at participating merchants, cookie decorating, donut making, treat bags and hot beverages, hay rides, live animals and much more. Mrs. Santa will host a reading at the Sugar Grove Library with crafts for children to make with hot chocolate and outside marshmallow fire roasting.

Of course, a Christmas event is not complete without the arrival of Santa. He will be coming to the park with the help of our local fire department at exactly 5 p.m. Flyers will be in all our local stores the week of Thanksgiving with a list of events including a map of all activities you can take part in.

Holiday Sales

Thank you to all those who supported our local business on Saturday, Nov. 23. The Sugar Grove Community held their special holiday events and many local business had special sales in preparation for the holiday season. The Sugar Grove Fire Department held its Annual Holiday Craft Sale and The Sugar Grove United Methodist Church held its Annual Holiday Treasure Sale. Many children had the chance to see Santa and Mrs. Claus and shop in the Kids only corner to purchase and wrap their Christmas presents for their families. The community support for all the events held was greatly appreciated.

Community Lunches

The Community Lunches in the area continue to be well attended. All lunches begin at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend any or all of the area community lunches.

Each month lunch is held on the first Friday of the month at the Mission Covenant Church at the corner of Matthews Run and Jackson Run roads. On the second Thursday of each month at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church located at the corner of Raceand Jamestown streets in the center of town. On the third Wednesday of the month at the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church located in Chandlers Valley.

Everyone is invited to attend.

Book Club

The Sugar Grove Free Library Book Club is looking onward to November. On, Monday, Nov. 25 when Chris Kerr will lead us in a discussion of Herman Wouk’s “A Hole in Texas”. (Herman Wouk, you may remember, won the Pulitzer for “The Caine Mutiny”) Our book is a satire on “Washington, the media, and science, and what happens when these three great forces of American culture clash.” It is witty and fast paced and might lead us to wonder just what does go on in our government. Pick up a copy of your book at the library and start reading.

Soup and Citrus Sale

The Eisenhower Choir Support Club is selling soup and citrus from Cooke Tavern freeze-dried soup mixes and Florida Indian River Groves oranges, grapefruit and tangelos. Anyone interested in supporting the activities of the choir, especially this expensive year of the Senior Choir trip to New York City, may place a prepaid order with any choir member or by calling the EMHS choir room at 757-8878 ext. 2055.

Orders will be delivered to you on Friday, Dec. 6.

WCSD Schedule

The Warren County School District be on Thanksgiving Holiday Break from Thursday, Nov. 28 through Dec. 2. Classes will resume on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Prelude to Christmas

The Youth Connection, the musical theater group from Struthers Library Theater for area students in grades 9-12, will be performing at the annual “Prelude to Christmas” music program at Hessel Valley Lutheran Church on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.. The whole community is welcome to come.

Stay after the program for a delicious selection of homemade Christmas cookies. The cost is a free will donation.

Red Kettle Campaign

The local churches will once again be ringing the bell for the local Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign throughout the holiday season. The kettle will once again be located outside of the Town and Country Food Center. Each weekend the kettle was manned by volunteers.

The Red Kettle Campaign helps raise donations for those who need it most by providing toys for kids, coats for the homeless, food for the hungry, and countless other programs. Local volunteers will begin ringing this weekend and continue each weekend through Christmas eve. Stop by and support the area Salvation army.

Food Pantry

The Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church, located at 210 Jamestown St., is the host site for the northern part of Warren County for this program. Second Harvest is the major supplier of food to charitable agencies throughout northwestern Pennsylvania. They obtain products from the organization’s warehouse and distribute them to individuals and families facing hard times in 11 counties.

The next Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21 opening at 8 a.m. The local Sugar Grove food pantry is in need of canned soup and other various canned goods. If you would like to make a donation, you can drop it off at the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church.

Honor Roll Breakfast

The merit and honor roll sixth-grade students at Sugar Grove Elementary School were recognized at a special breakfast on Thursday, Nov. 21. SGES Faculty and Principal Marcia Madigan were joined by Superintendent Dr. Clark and WCSD Director Ruth Nelson to congratulate each student. A breakfast was provided by the Nutrition Group for the students and their parents.

The student receiving this honor for the first grading period were: Merit Roll: Thomas Baran, Dakota Chase, Lilly Darling, Logan Greene, Logan Jaquay, Michelle Kingsley, Alex Roberts, Catelyn Thompson and Mattison Wallin. Honor Roll: Max Caudill, Cassie Gourley, Ashley Hall, Nevaeh Hamilton, Trystan Sandak, Destiny Snook, Jacoby Wallin, Emiley Wheeler, Drew Williams and Aubrey Younger.

Winter Sports Season

The start of the Eisenhower Knights winter sports season is here and the teams have been hard at work practicing for weeks.

The girls and boys basketball teams will have scrimmage games this week and prepare for their first regular season games happening Friday, Dec. 6. They will both open their seasons with match-ups against the Sheffield Wolverines. The Knights wrestling team will start its season against Corry on Dec. 10.
