Sally Nelson O’Brien, 53, passed away at home on Friday, November 22, 2013 in Durham, NC.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 1, at 2 o’clock p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1200 W. Cornwallis Rd., Durham, NC 27705. After the service, there will be a gathering for fellowship, remembrance, and reflection at Metro 8, 743 Ninth Street, Durham, NC 27705.
Sally was born in Wooster, OH on August 2, 1960 to Maxine and Tom Nelson, of Ludlow, Pa., who survive. Also surviving is her husband, Larry O’Brien and her two daughters, Jessica Blakely and Amy Blakely, also of Durham, NC; two sisters, Gwen Nelson (Mike) Bengfort of The Woodlands, TX and Patty Nelson (Chris) Merrifield of Atlanta, GA; and niece, Maggie Merrifield.
She attended schools in Charleston, WV, Gainesville, TX, and Houston, TX. She received her B.A. degree in Modern Dance from Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX.
Sally was a certified personal trainer and fitness coach. She enjoyed her music, literature, cooking, and being with her family and her many dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions in Sally’s name be made to the YMCA Lakewood, 2119 Chapel Hill Rd., Durham, NC 27707 or to a church or charity of the donor’s choice.
