Toys for Tots final signup next week

The final sign-up event for this year’s Toys for Tots campaign in Warren County is fast approaching.

Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29-30, near The Bon-Ton at the Warren Mall, is the last chance to sign children up to help ensure they have something waiting under the tree on Christmas morning.

From noon until 5 p.m., parents or guardians of children up to age 16 who reside in Warren County can be signed up to take part in the Toys for Tots program.

The child’s Social Security or Access card is required for sign-up.

The event will be the last chance to sign children up. E-mail and phone call registrations will not be accepted.

The deadline, according to local Toys for Tots Coordinator Karen Madigan, is necessary to ensure toy distributions can run as scheduled.

“There comes a point when the time gets tight,” Madigan said.

The distributions for sign-ups in October will be held at the Marine Corps League building, 2355 Jackson Ave., on Dec. 7 and 14.

Registrants will be given a distribution time between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Madigan says she expects the program to aid between 800 and 900 children this year.

“Hopefully, we can get them all taken care of,” she said. “If there’s any fires or disasters in the area, we try to take care of those, too.”

She also said the program is only possible because of community support.

“We have scout and student groups that help us. We’re very thankful for that,” Madigan noted. “The community’s wonderful. That’s what keeps us going. So, many thanks to everybody.”

Madigan said toy collection boxes will all be out by next week. Final pickup of collected toys will be on Dec. 20.

Distributions for the November sign-ups and emergencies will be held Dec. 21.

“Toys should be new and unwrapped for children up to age years,” Madigan said. “Needed items this year include coloring books, crayons, socks, slipper socks, hats, batteries and boy/girl bath items (shower gels/body spray/lotions).”
