You can’t do any better than the best you’ve done, unless you’re Eisenhower senior cross country runner Devin VanGuilder, front center. VanGuilder finished 10th out of 285 at Saturday’s District 10 Class A Cross Country Championships at Buhl Park in Sharon, and qualified for states for the third straight year. His 3.1-mile time of 17 minutes and two seconds was his fastest this season, but the fact he says he got back to states because his teammates motivated him to, and the fact he says the trip will be more memorable because his little cousin qualified, too, makes him more inspiring. VanGuilder is the Times Observer Male Athlete of the Week, sponsored by McDonald’s.
