CROSS COUNTRY: Running Relatives: VanGuilder, Messinger qualify for state meet

SHARON-They are cousins, so running is in the family.

Both Youngsville freshman Brooke Messinger and Eisenhower senior Devin VanGuilder have qualified for the PIAA Cross Country Championships, based on their finishes at Saturday’s District 10 Championships at Buhl Park.

Runners from the top two girls teams, plus 10 other individuals, qualify for the state meet in Class A, so Messinger advanced with flying colors.

Messinger bettered the 20-minute mark and finished third overall out of 115 in the Class A Girls race, finishing 20 seconds behind Cambridge Springs’ Reilly Walsh, in 19:57. The Lady Eagles’ freshman shattered her personal best time by 37 seconds.

“I wanted to break the 20-minute mark before the season was over,(and) also beat the two North East girls which beat me all season, so I went as hard as I could before I collapsed at the finish line,” said Messinger. “My race surprised the heck out of myself, and never thought I would be able to make states as a freshman.”

“My cousin (VanGuilder) is an amazing runner as it is much harder to get top 10 for boys,” she said. “I look up to him; hopefully I will be just as good as him my senior year. The thought of me as a little freshy going to states against girls as fast as me and much faster is going to be challenging. At first it felt overwhelming (to be) going against girls that are up to three years older than me and looking at times of the lead girl that won states last year. But I cannot change that; I will have to go with what I have and take these hard days this week and use it to my advantage Saturday.”

Her cousin, Devin VanGuilder, qualified for states for the third time, finishing 10th overall out of 285 in the Class A boys race. Runners from the top three boys teams, plus 10 other individuals, qualified for states, so VanGuilder also had room to spare. He finished the 3.1-mile race in 17:02 – his best time of the season at that distance.

“I think the race went pretty good,” said VanGuilder. “I finished ahead of some of the people I haven’t been able to beat yet this year. Yes, my goal was to make it back to states and do better than what I did earlier in the year at the Sharpsville meet. I think that it is pretty sweet that Brooke and I made it to states and the fact that we are cousins makes the experience more memorable. It is a really good feeling going back to states as a senior, what a great way to end the season. I couldn’t have done it, though, without the support that I have from my teammates. They are the ones that would tell me at the beginning of every race that I could do it.”

No other county runners qualified for states.

For Youngsville’s boys, Tanner Burns was 96th in 19:46, Bobby Bower 105th in 20:15, Jeremy Lyon 109th in 20:25, Collin Lehnen 114th in 21:06, Zach Ishman 115th in 21:09, Chester Ciukaj 121st in 21:36, and Collin Alekson 128th in 23:01.

In the Class AA boys race, Warren freshman Blake Ristau just missed qualifying for states, finishing two places behind the cut.

Ristau was 19th out of 101 in 17:36, Christian Olson 30th in 18:19, Sean McGuinness 41st in 18:50, Max Pierson 46th in 18:58, Brandon Nielson 50th in 19:04, Mark Reiff 67th in 19:44, and Seth Johnson 72nd in 19:54.
