VOLLEYBALL: Sheffield tops Ike in county clash
Sheffield was too strong for Eisenhower on Monday night, as the Wolverines defeated their Warren County rival in four sets, 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 25-13, spoiling senior night for the Lady Knights at the John M. Neese Memorial Gymnasium.
The Wolverines quickly jumped out to a commanding lead in the first set, winning 14 of the first 15 points. Eisenhower would battle back to within five points, but were unable to get any closer.
After Sheffield won a close second set, the Lady Knights got themselves back into the match by taking the third set, 25-21. After Eisenhower led by as many as nine points, the Wolverines fought back to within one, but Ike would go on to win six of the final nine points.
The two teams found themselves tied at 10 points apiece in the fourth, but Sheffield took control from there, finishing the set, and match, on a 15-3 run.
“It was a good win,” Sheffield coach Traci Vile said. “We started out slow with our passing, but then we started to come together as a team.”
Maddie Fiscus finished with six blocks and four kills for Sheffield, while Brandy Rockwell, Anna Baldensperger and Marlea Sprandle each added five kills. Rachel Leichtenberger contributed 16 assists and 22 service points.
Mallory Trumbull finished with 17 service points and three aces for Ike. Marion Sherer added 13 kills and nine digs, while Jenna Jordan registered 12 service points, 23 assists and two aces.
The Wolverines also won the junior varsity match, 25-23, 25-23. Kaitlyn Borden finished with eight service points and Julia Vile added six.
Kirsten Beardsley finished with three service points, three blocks and one kill for the Lady Knights. Amanda Dallas and Samara Warren added four and five service points, respectively.
