GIRLS SOCCER: Lady Dragons downed at Harbor Creek
HARBORCREEK-The Warren Lady Dragons girls soccer team suffered a 8-2 loss to the Lady Huskies of Harbor Creek on Saturday, October 12.
“With a young team, you always get surprised by who steps up. Tonight it was Claire Abplanalp,” said Warren coach Bob Domville. “This was probably her best effort of the season. Not only was she involved on both Dragon goals, she had a real strong game in the center.”
After allowing a pair of goals to a very quick Husky team, the Lady Dragons were able to string together some possession, and in the twelfth minute Amy Castagnino was tripped just outside the penalty area, giving her team a penalty kick. Abplanalp converted the opportunity, making the score 2-1.
Warren was almost able to tie the game when Aldyn Poston’s shot skipped off the top of the crossbar, however the Huskies regrouped and took a 5-1 lead into the half.
The Lady Dragons’ second goal came via a corner kick taken by Ablanalp and finished by Kathryn Lobdell.
“We knew coming into this season we were going to battle growing pains as players step into varsity positions, unfortunately we have been bitten by the injury bug as well,” added Domville. “We haven’t had our best eleven on the field at one time yet this season, so some of the younger players have been called to do a little more sooner then we had hoped.”
“These girls have really matured and are showing a lot of potential to develop into a vey strong side. Players that showed a lot of progress tonite, besides Claire, were Lindsay Onuffer, Cheylee Smith, and Amy Castagnino is becoming a force at center midfield.”
Warren’s junior varsity team battled to a 0-0 tie with the Huskies.
The Lady Dragons return to action on Thursday when they welcome Bradford for Senior Night at War Memorial Field.
