RAYMOND GATES

Raymond L. Gates, Grand Valley, PA passed away on Oct. 7, 2013. Mr. Gates was born July 3, 1923 in Grand Valley to Leslie and Ethel Gates. He married the former Ella Anderson on Aug. 21, 1947 in Corry, PA. She died on Oct. 8, 1995. He married the former Elinor Morton on Dec. 23, 1996, who died on September 3, 2011. Mr. Gates graduated from Youngsville High School in 1941. He was a World War II veteran, having been inducted in the U.S. Army in April 1943. He served with the Third Infantry Division. He was in two invasions, Anzio, Italy and Southern France. He was thrice wounded receiving the Purple Heart Medal with Two Clusters. Also, he received the Bronze Medal with Five Clusters. On Dec. 9, 1944, in France, he was awarded a Battlefield Commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Third Division. He was discharged in January 1945. He attended the Grand Valley United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He was selfemployed as a Rural Letter Carrier. He retired with 37 years of Government service. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Brevard Gates, of Plummer and a step sister, Alice Boland, of Tucson, AZ. He is survived by two step daughters, Susan (Richard) Irland, Egg Harbor, NJ and Kathleen (Terry) Haehn, Grand Valley, PA, as well as a step son, Dr. David (Kim) Morton, Columbia, MD, a step brother, Robert (Teresa) Garber, of Oceanside, CA. Also surviving are two step grandchildren, Chris McKean and is wife Lori, Brent Haehn and his wife Shannon as well as six step great grandchildren, Colton and Clayton McKean, Branden Haehn, Trevor Haehn, Christine Haehn, and Brenna Haehn

A time of visitation will be held from 1 2 pm on Friday, October, 11, 2013 at the Grand Valley United Methodist Church where a funeral service will be held at 2 pm with Rev. Ralph Culp, pastor officiating. The Honor Guard of the Youngsville American Legion will hold full military honors at the church and interment will follow in Newton Cemetery and will be private.
