FOOTBALL: Union City keeps Youngsville winless
UNION CITY -In a game of winless teams, Youngsville couldn’t put away Union City in a 50-19 Region 2 road loss.
“Every drive we’d drive the ball and then we’d have a mental breakdown and stall our drive,” said Youngsville coach John Victor.
On what was arguably Youngsville’s biggest drive of the season, the Eagles first punted away the ball on a fourth and long from their own 40. Union City was called for roughing the kicker, giving Youngsville new life at the end of the second quarter.
Youngsville quarterback Jake Lauffenburger found himself in trouble when Union City’s defensive line broke through and a sack pushed Youngsville back to second down and 22.
Lauffenburger sent a rocket down field 35 yards to Sam Bubbenmoyer, picking up a crucial first down.
Lauffenburger’s next pass travelled 12 yards to James Frazier, keeping the Youngsville touchdown hopes alive. Despite those two great passes, a series of incompletions brought Youngsville to fourth-and-goal on the eight-yard line.
Lauffenburger was overwhelmed by the Union City defensive line before he could get rid of the ball and Union City picked up the ball on downs on its own 10.
Union City quarterback Brody Mangel found a hole in the Youngsville defense on second down before taking off downfield 86 yards for Union City’s third touchdown of the night and adding the extra point, putting Youngsville down 21-0.
Youngsville didn’t let Union City keep its 21-point lead for long. Joe Frazier recovered a Youngsville fumble with 2:17 left in the second quarter. The Eagles pressed the ball through the Union City zone before sophomore receiver Solomon Clark caught a 30-yard pass from Lauffenburger in the end zone to give Youngsville its first touchdown of the night. James Frazier added an extra point that barely made it through the goal posts to cut the Union City lead to 14.
The night didn’t start off any better for the Eagles. After slow starts and the teams were finally able to get their offenses moving, Union City struck first with a two-yard run from Tanner Hancock and a failed two-point conversion attempt. Union City scored again with 8:51 remaining in the first, this time with a 29-yard run from Mangel and a successful two-point conversion run by Brett Reynolds to put the Bears up 14-0.
“We made a lot of mental mistakes,” said Victor. “When we came out in the second half, we were ready to play this game, but we got three penalties right off the bat. We lost the mental game. We’re getting a lot better at the physical game, but we have to get better mentally. So that mental toughness is what we’re going to work on.”
Those mental breakdowns took center stage with two back-to-back Union City touchdowns in the third quarter. Lauffenburger fumbled on the Youngsville 10-yard-line and the Union City recovery allowed Mangel another short touchdown run. Barely two minutes later, penalties pushed Youngsville back to fourth and 20. Bubbenmoyer fumbled the punt attempt to the Youngsville 10. Another Union City recovery put the Bears up 34-7 on a 10-yard run by Brett Reynolds.
“I’m still proud of my guys,” Victor said. “They don’t give up, we’re still learning and we’re still getting better.”
Youngsville heads home next Friday to take on Region 2 opponent Seneca.
