GIRLS TENNIS: Dragons fall to 5-8 on season
Warren fell by a 5-0 score to visiting Villa Maria on Monday in the final home match of the season at Betts Courts.
Top Dragon Cassie Johnson fell, 2-6, 0-6, to Jane Reichel. Senior Corie Eckman dropped a 3-6, 0-6 decision to Natale Bird. Maggi Hansen dropped a 3-6, 1-6 decision to Abby Hallman.
In second doubles, the Dragon pair of Kim Parroccini and Karly Taylor played inspired tennis, according to head coach Jeff Bartsch, with the pair of Winkler and Taylor, losing 2-6, 3-6. The highlight of the day, he said, was played at top doubles with Alexis Vavala and partner Shoshanna Ochocki as they took on Messina/Hortsnar. The Dragons dropped the opening set in a tiebreak by a 2-7 margin. The second set was all Warren as Ochocki was unbeatable at the net, and Vavala was steady from the baseline with Warren taking the second set, 6-1. With the match knotted at one-set all, the third set saw the Dragons drop the first three games before staging a comeback. The three-game lead was too much for Warren to get back and the Dragons dropped the final set 3-6.
“There were some really great points in all five matches today,” said Bartsch. “The girls fought hard but it just didn’t happen today. All that we ask of our players is that they play at their highest possible level.”
The Dragons are now 5-8 overall on the season and have two matches remaining. Warren will travel to Fairview on Tuesday, and have a make-up with McDowell next week. On Wednesday, this week, the Dragons will travel to the Tri-County Championships, in Sharon, to play in the multiple team event.
“This is a great tournament in which all 15 of our girls will be afforded the opportunity to compete,” said Bartsch.
