FOOTBALL: Dragons come up short at Oil City
OIL CITY – Warren’s late comeback attempt fell just short in Friday’s Region 5 match-up at Oil City High School, as the Oilers handed the Dragons their first loss of the season, 41-28.
Warren is now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Region 5, while Oil City improves to 3-2 and 2-1.
“A couple plays here and there, and it’s a new game,” said Warren coach Greg Latimer. “I’m proud of the boys, Oil City is a very good football team. Our guys didn’t quit. They played all 48.”
The Dragons started the scoring early after D.J. Fehlman intercepted a Jackson McFall pass at the Oil City 20 yard line.
Warren made good use of the field position, scoring on a 8-yard run from Kyle Kulka. Ryan Shattuck tacked on the extra point for a 7-0 Warren lead.
The next 14 points came from Oil City, courtesy of a 13-yard pass from McFall to Jesse Rice and a 9-yard connection from Trent Zdarko to Logan Way.
Warren tied the game on a 17-yard pass from Fehlman to Tanner Stanz, but the Oilers got one more score just before the half when McFall found Frank Serbati from 18-yards out.
Oil City picked up where it left off after the half when Rice found the end zone for the second time, this time on a 32 yard reverse.
Fehlman hit Shattuck with a 42-yard pass for a score, but again the Oilers answered when Zdarko busted off a quarterback keeper from midfield to extend the lead in favor of the home team.
The Dragons’ effort to cut into the lead suffered a setback when a handoff was botched at Warren’s own 34 yard line. The ball was kicked even deeper into Dragon territory, and Oil City’s Alex Hargenrader fell on the ball in the end zone for an Oiler touchdown.
Warren gave it one last push, scoring on another hook-up between Fehlman and Stanz. The Dragons made it an eight-point score when Evan Suppa hit Stanz in the end zone, and Luke Wortman recovered an onside kick to give his team life.
Warren’s last drive made it all the way to the Oil City two yard line, where Fehlman was stripped of the ball with time ticking away. The Oilers recovered, and took a knee to end the game.
Fehlman finished the game going 16-of-25 for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Kulka rushed for 87 yards on 17 carries, and Shattuck was the leading receiver with 5 catches for 92 yards. Fehlman, Kulka, and Shattuck each added an interception on defense.
The Dragons will look to get back in the win column next week, when they host Region 5 opponent Slippery Rock at War Memorial Field on Homecoming.
“Slippery Rock is another good team,” said Latimer. “We’ll be ready for the challenge.”
