FOOTBALL: Shutout win for Sheffield
EMPORIUM – This week, things came together.
The Sheffield Wolverines evened their record at 2-2 in a 27-0 shutout win over Cameron County Friday night in Emporium.
Sheffield opened up strong with the first touchdown on their opening drive. Senior Noah Heeter caught a 10-yard pass from quarterback Adam Higby before Higby caught up with Ricky Prosen for the two-point conversion.
Barely three minutes later, Jereek Jackson ran for an 11-yard touchdown, giving the Wolverines a 14-0 lead they carried into halftime.
The second quarter was flat for Sheffield. Cameron County recovered a Sheffield fumble and blocked a punt, but went nowhere with the plays. In a series of strange events, Cameron County quarterback threw an interception that was then fumbled by Sheffield and recovered by Cameron County.
But Sheffield came out renewed in the third quarter. Jackson gave the Wolverines both of their final touchdowns. The first came from a 62-yard run while the other was the product of a 25-yard interception return.
“Obviously, the first three games we’ve gotten off to a rough start,” said Sheffield head coach Dave Fitch. “We’ve had turnovers, we’ve gone down, we’ve dug holes that are hard to get out of. Tonight, we had two really nice drives back to back, went up 14-0, and that was really good.”
While Fitch was unimpressed with the Wolverines “reverting to their old ways” in the second quarter, he was thrilled with their effort in the second half.
“With the exception of about a quarter tonight, I thought our kids played really well,” said Fitch. “They pursued the football and they tackled hard. It was just a good game from everybody. I’m just happy that overall the kids finally played the first quarter like I know they can.”
Sheffield gained about a hundred more yards offensively than Cameron County (1-3) in the Allegheny Mountain League North opener for both teams. Jackson ran for 88 yards on just 10 carries, and Higby completed 11-of-20 passes at quarterback.
The Wolverines look to add another win to their season next Friday at Coudersport.
