Sports Briefly 09/20/2013
Here is the varsity slate of action for all county sports teams and athletes for Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21:
Football: Warren at Meadville, 7 p.m.
Sheffield at Cameron County, 7 p.m.
Eisenhower at Mercyhurst Prep, 7 p.m.
Maplewood at Youngsville, 7 p.m.
Volleyball: East Forest at Tidioute, 4:30 p.m.
Girls Golf: Warren at Meadville Invitational, 9 a.m.
Boys Soccer: Warren at Jamestown, 3 p.m.
Girls Soccer: General McLane at Warren, 11 a.m.
Volleyball: Warren at Clarion Tournament, 9 a.m.
Cross Country: Eisenhower/Warren at Sharpsville Invitational, 9 a.m.
Julie Moyer had the low gross of 51 and Debbie Bialas had the low net of 33 in The Jackson Valley Golf Course Women’s League on Thursday, September 12. Bialas led the C Flight with a gross of 53, Ellie Shanshala shot a 58, Sue Shields a 61, and Jodi Arthur and Darielle Hoden each shot 66.
Jr. high hoops
The Sheffield A team fell to 0-4 on the season with a 40-13 loss to Kane Wednesday, September 18 at Sheffield High School. Lexi Lyon led Sheffield with seven points, Fait Smith added four, and Eliza Davidson two in the loss.
The Sheffield B team picked up their first win of the season, 20-12 over Kane. A quick Kane score to start the fourth quarter cut Sheffield’s lead to 14-12 before the Wolverine defense came alive, forcing numerous turnovers. Isis Pratz, Mya Grubbs, Autumn Ferry, and Fait Smith all had numerous steals, turning them into points on the offensive end to pull away late in the fourth quarter.
Behind a big third quarter, Lyon again lead Sheffield with six points and a powerhouse game on the glass, Grubbs and Pratz added four points each, and Ferry, Smith, and Kennedy Confer each added two each in the win.
Eisenhower split a pair of junior high girls basketball games with Union City Thursday afternoon, losing 38-20 in the Blue game and winning the Gold game, 12-10. For the Blue team, Savannah McKown led the way with 10 points, Payton Mineweaser added eight, and Maya Edwards and Cameron Edwards each had one.
In the gold game, Delaney Nizzi had four points, while Shaylah Hagg, Brielle Whitney, Anna McJunkin, and Cameron Edwards each added two.
Eisenhower will head to Tidioute Charter School on Monday for a pair of games against the Bulldogs.
Jr. high grid
The Beaty-Warren Middle School seventh graders improved to 2-0 on the year with a 7-0 win against Fort LeBoeuf Thursday afternoon. Austin Cummings scored the game’s only touchdown on a 10 yard run, and Griffin Suppa tacked on the extra point for Beaty. Marvin Bryant played strong defensively for the Dragons. Beaty will return to action next Thursday looking for win number three at Titusville.
Eisenhower grad Kelsey Repke collected 19 digs in Pitt-Bradford’s loss to Houghton College on Wednesday night. The Panthers fall to 4-8 on the year and will play St. John Fisher and Brockport Saturday in Rochester, New York.
The Warren boys soccer game against Jamestown (NY), originally scheduled to be played Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Field, will now be played in Jamestown. Varsity action kicks off at 3 p.m. with the junior varsity game to follow.
