GIRLS TENNIS: Lady Dragons shut out Central Tech

The Lady Dragons scored their first shutout win of the 2013 campaign with a solid 5-0 win on Tuesday over the Falcons at Betts Courts.

Experimenting with players in different spots in the lineup, Warren took its first victory courtesy of Alexis Vavala in the third singles match. Vavala defeated Central’s Abby Adams in two games, 6-2, 6-2.

“Alexis has improved a ton since the beginning of the season,” said Lady Dragons’ assistant coach John Parroccini. “Her forehand is lethal and she used the inside-out drive today to perfection.”

The second completed match was a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory by Warren senior Corie Eckman.

“Corie took control of the match from the very first point and dominated play with powerful forehands which took (Central’s) Molly Adams out of the match,” said Dragons coach Jeff Bartsch. “Corie is becoming a confident player with powerful strokes. And, she is minimizing her errors.”

In first doubles, the team of Shoshanna Ochocki and Karly Taylor defeated the Falcons’ pair, 6-3, 6-3.

“This pair is working well and they have learned how to win matches together,” added Parroccini.

Warren’s top singles player, Cassie Johnson, had her hands full with a tough and persistent Elena Prenovitz. Prenovitz hit a number of potential winners, only to see Johnson track down every ball and send it back.

“Cassie is consistent and more persistent,” said Bartsch. “Though most points were rallied in the range of 12-15 balls struck, Cassie won those long rallies and prevailed by 6-2, 6-2 scores.”

The duo of Megan Waterfield and Sydney Ewing took the court as second doubles, and defeated Central’s Anjanique Clark and Kati Proctor, 6-3, 6-4.

“Megan is steady and has been playing great tennis as of late,” said Bartsch. “Sydney is quick and powerful at the net and the pair is dangerous.”

“This is our first shut-out win of the season,” added Bartsch. “Our girls are beginning to play better. Our confidence is building and the girls are putting their tennis knowledge to good use. I am hoping for big strides as we get closer to the Tri-County Tournament and the D-10 Championships.”

In exhibition play, the pair of Phoebe Nelson and Sarah Casey earned a win, as did Alexis Vavala, Maria Miller, Madalyn Harding, and Maggi Hansen.

Warren is now 5-5 on the season and 2-5 in region play. The Dragons will travel to Edinboro on Thursday afternoon to play the Lancers of General McLane.
