FOOTBALL: Youngsville drops to 0-2

ERIE – After being shut out in their season opener last week at home, the Youngsville Eagles dropped to 0-2 after a 39-6 loss on the road Friday at Iroquois.

Iroquois jumped out to a fast start when Matt McLean returned the opening kickoff 87 yards to put the Braves up 6-0 only14 seconds in. By the end of the first quarter, Iroquois had a 19-0 lead on the Eagles after two touchdowns from Iroquois junior Brandon Roda.

The second quarter saw the Eagles fare no better. Roda ran in a 93-yard touchdown before Youngsville’s Jake Lauffenburger was intercepted by Jeff Ratiu. Roda ran in another touchdown, this one 23 yards, to put Youngsville down by 39 at halftime.

Youngsville held Iroquois scoreless in the second half. With 3:02 to play in the third, Lauffenburger gave Youngsville its first touchdown of the season on a four-yard run.

“We just have to keep trying to get better,” said Youngsville head coach John Victor of a young squad. “Our lack of understanding the game and being able to react quick enough really showed tonight. The inexperience that we have is really starting to show.

“All we can do is keep trying to get more experience and keep getting better,” said Victor. “We didn’t quit in the second half and that’s what I asked them to do. We came back and we played tough the second half. It’s just down to blocking and tackling and inexperience. In the first half we didn’t block and we didn’t tackle and as soon as we get some experience, maybe we’ll get there.”

Youngsville heads to Cambridge Springs next Friday at 7 p.m. to face the Devils in their home opener.
