VOLLEYBALL: Warren fifth at tourney

WATERFORD – Warren advanced to the playoff quarterfinals, tying for fifth place, in the 16-team Fort LeBoeuf Tournament on Saturday.

In the morning pool play, the Dragons went 2-1, beating Falconer, N.Y., 25-15, and Villa Maria, 25-5, then losing to defending state champion Fort LeBoeuf, 16-25.

In the afternoon pool play, Warren beat Harborcreek 2-0 (25-20, 25-24), and Cochranton 2-0 (25-23, 25-23), while losing to Corry 0-2 (19-25, 23-25). The Dragons’ 4-2 record in the afternoon pool placed them as the sixth seed going into the playoffs.

Warren drew Fairview in the first round of the playoffs and won, 25-17. Next up, in the quarterfinals, was third-seeded General McLane, who would knock Warren out of the tournament, 17-25, 25-20, 4-15.

“We played some very good competition for the season-opening tournament, and did very well, playing competitively in each and every match, and winning a number of games against quality teams,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan.

At 5-3 overall, “our overall teamwork was excellent, as we got contributions from every team member,” said Dolan.

Rachel Lasecki had 37 kills and 25 digs for Warren, and Valerie Latimer 24 kills, seven blocks, and eight aces in the tourney.

Teah Bines controlled the ball, with 56 assists, 21 digs and 10 aces. McKenzie Merenick, on defense, led with 38 digs, and Allie Morrison contributed 21 kills.

Paige Wilson finished with 13 kills, two blocks and five aces and Ashley Barker 30 assists and four aces for Warren, which hosts Cranberry on Tuesday.

GM went on to lose to Fort LeBoeuf in the semifinals. Fort LeBoeuf then beat Conneaut 2-0 to win its own tournament.
