GIRLS SOCCER: Lady Dragons open with 3-1 at home

The Warren Lady Dragons Soccer squad started the season on a winning note Saturday, beating the Titusville Rockets, 3-1, in girls’ soccer action at War Memorial Field.

Lady Dragons’ coach Bob Domville was happy with his team’s performance as was especially proud of his “younger players (who) stepped it up in their first game of the season.”

The game started off in the Dragons’ favor as freshman Kathryn Lobdell notched her team’s first goal with an assist by Abby Funari. After much time spent on the opponents’ side of the field, Lobdell found the back of the net again for the Dragons, this time unassisted, to give Warren a 2-0 lead at the half.

Warren picked up where it left off in the second half as Morgan Danielson got on the board for the Lady Dragons with the help of another assist by Funari to make it a three-goal advantage.

With the hopes of a shut-out, the Lady Dragons continued to perform strong. The Rockets did succeed in finding the net late in the game, but the Dragons were able to close the game with a final score of 3-1 on home turf.

“The game had a few injuries in it and the heat was brutal so it was good that our bench was deep,” said Domville. Many substitutes got their first chance on the high school field Saturday as the exhaution was setting in on many players. “It was a good start to the season, but we still have a lot of work to do with such a young team.”

The Lady Dragons will return to action on Tuesday, travelling to Erie to take onthe Strong Vincent Colonels.
