XC: Knights, Dragons open cross country season at McDowell Invitational

ERIE-A total of 22 runners from Warren and Eisenhower kicked off the 2013 cross country season Saturday, August 31 at the 40th McDowell Invitational in Erie.

Eisenhower’s Devin Vanguilder posted the county’s best finish, taking 16th place out of 181 male runners with a time of 17:46.4. Freshman Blake Ristau’s time of 18:44.6 was best for the Dragons and earned him a 50th place finish.

Rounding out the boys finishers was Warren’s Seth Johnson (113th), Mark Reiff (116th), Sean McGuinness (120th), Max Pierson (127th), James Sturdevant (154th), and Reed Swanson (166th); and Eisenhower’s Ben Morrison (117th), Jacob McCool (140th), Jason Morine (158th), Derek Lasecki (163th), and Domanick Dietrick (181st).

The girls side also saw two county runners finish in the top 50 with Eisenhower’s Julia Bauer coming in 37th with a time of 22:07.8 and Warren’s Anna Falvo finishing 50th in 22:28.9.

Also competing for Warren was Deanna Hahn (76th), Kristina Weikert (133rd), and Brittany Massa (139th); and for Eisenhower Lacey Stanko (116th), Kate Daugharthy (117th), Hannah Bortz (146th), and Grace Thompson (152nd).

“For an early season race, we thought everyone ran well,” said Warren coach Julia Dustin. “We have a good starting point for the season and know a little bit more about what we need to work on. All we need to do now is to keep working hard, keep working as a team, and good things will happen.”

“For the new ones this lets them find out what it’s all about, and it lets the older kids see where they’re at,” said Eisenhower coach Darlene Beach. “It was a pretty humid day, but we still had four kids improve their times.”

The Knights and Dragons will return to action against one another on Tuesday when Warren visits Ike for a non-region dual meet.
