FOOTBALL: Eagles are shut out in opener

The Youngsville Eagles fell to the Fairview Tigers 42-0 Friday night in their non-region opener at Mike Shine Field.

Fairview took an early lead with 7:49 to go in the first on a 23-yard reception by Harold Coles from Ben Kocan. The Tigers continued to light up the scoreboard with help from two touchdowns from Shannon Jackson, a touchdown from Michael McCloy, and two more from Coles.

On the Youngsville end, head coach John Victor saw highlights from quarterback Jake Lauffenburger and running back Matt Fox. Despite the loss, he was pleased with his team’s overall effort. “I asked the boys to give me 100 percent effort tonight, and play all out, and the boys did that. We just made a lot of young mistakes,” Victor said.

Despite an early sack and a late recovered fumble for Youngsville, in between the effort will need to be met with correcting mistakes. Victor wants to see the young mistakes his team made resolved and the team to become more cohesive as a whole, he said.

“That’s our motto,” said Victor, whose Eagles, 1-9 last year, were outgained 281 yards to 101. They trailed 35-0 at the half. “We’re under construction and we’re going to keep building to get better. So I’m not displeased with our performance. Yes, I’d like to be on the winning side in the end, but on the other hand, as long as my boys keep giving me a hundred percent maximum effort that’s all I ask.”

Youngsville travels next Friday to Iroquois High School to take on the Braves.
