VOLLEYBALL: Lady Lions start with victory

Warren County Christian School’s girls volleyball team started its 2013 season just as it ended 2012 – with a win.

Last year’s New Penn Christian Conference regular-season and tournament champs topped Meadville Calvary Baptist 25-11, 22-25, 25-12, 25-12 at WCCS.

“Overall, I was happy,” said WCCS coach Monica Kerr, whose Lady Lions are about the same team as last year’s undefeated team, except they are improving, getting “a little more aggressive on offense.”

She said that will lead to a little inconsistency at the start, which included a game-two loss. But the Lions rebounded with dominant games three and four.

Alyssa Kerr had 15 service points, three aces and 11 kills; Jess Lauffenburger five aces; Kaitlin Weidner 15 assists, three kills and two blocks; Whitney Poindexter 18 points, six aces and three kills; Caitlin McCall seven points and five aces as the new libero, and; Dymphee Zortman 12 points and eight kills.

In a 25-13, 25-12 junior varsity win, Hunter Uplinger had three aces for WCCS, Allison Weidner four kills, and Rachel Brenner 12 points.

WCCS hosts Erie Bethel on Tuesday.
