College news

Sheffield High School graduate Nick Bonavita is a sophomore strong safety on the Juniata College football team. Bonavita saw action in seven games as a freshman in 2012, and racked up two solo tackles in the Eagles’ final game of the year against Susquehanna. Juniata opens the 2013 season Saturday, September 7, at home against Thiel College.

Sonia Probst fired the low gross round of 44 and Jackie Darling had the low net of 34 in this week’s Cable Hollow Thursday Morning Ladies League play. Jill Dart’s 51 was the second low gross, and Nancy Phillips tied with Marge Sickler for the second low net of 35. Here are the flight-by-flight leaders for August 29:

Pete Hofert shot the low gross of 37 and Bob Howels had the low net of 34 in Wednesday’s Youngsville Area Senior Golf League at Maplehurst Country Club. The first half winners, Team 7 (Dave Dibble, John Holthouse, Emil Bundy, and John McKinney) will take on second half winners Team 14 (Pete Hofert, Dave Peck, Chuck Briggs, and John Minavio) in the league championship on Tuesday, September 3.

Horseshoes

The 2013 Pennsylvania State Horseshoe Tournament will be this weekend at the Warren County Fairgrounds. Pitching begins at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and will continue through Sunday, Sept. 1, when four categories of State Champions will be crowned.
