Sugar Grove Area News in Brief
The Warren County School District students will start back to school on Wednesday, Sept. 4. The Sugar Grove Imaginative Preschool students ages 3 through 5 will also start back to preschool on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
The construction at Eisenhower High School is happening around the clock, seven days a week, and we are all excited about the unveiling of the newly renovated facility. In the meantime, our fall sports programs have begun with a few minor changes in locations.
The Knights varsity football team is holding its crash week at the Sugar Grove Elementary School from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The Knights marching band is in full swing practicing its music and marching at Russell Elementary School. Girls basketball has begun its drills in the mornings in the gym at the Russell Elementary School. The Knights soccer teams are practicing on the Eisenhower soccer fields along Fairbanks Road and Route 957. Our cheerleading squads are practicing evenings at Sugar Grove Elementary School and the volleyball team is presently practicing at the YMCA in Warren each evening.
Remember that to participate in a fall team sport you need to have completed your physical. If you are in need of contacting the Eisenhower High School Office over the summer months, they have also relocated. During the summer construction period the offices are currently operating out of the Russell Elementary School. If you need to reach anyone in the office you can contact them by calling 757-4507.
Back to School Picnic
The Eisenhower Middle School PTA will be holding its Annual Back-To-School cookout for the middle school teachers, parents, and students on Saturday, Aug. 31, .from 1 to 4 p.m. in the parking lot at EMHS.
Freedom Walk 2013
The Sugar Grove community will be participating in the nationwide America Supports You Freedom Walk on Sept.11 to remember 9-11 victims and honor military past and present who protect America’s freedom.
The 2013 America Supports You Freedom Walk is sponsored by the AMVETS (American Veterans) and AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary. It will be happening on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. in the Sugar Grove Town Park. Our walk will begin and end in the park and everyone all ages is invited to join us.
Paul Tutmaher will be our special speaker prior to the start of the event. This year marks the 12-year anniversary of the tragic events at the Pentagon, the twin towers in New York City, and Shanksville, Pa The purpose of the America Supports you Freedom Walk is to establish a national tradition to reflect on the lives lost on Sept. 11, renew our commitment to freedom and the values of our country and to honor our veterans, past and present.
The route for America Supports You Freedom Walk will begin at the Sugar Grove Town Park. The walk will be less than two miles. For more information you can log on to www.AmericaSupportsYou.mil
SG Book Club News For those interested in being a part of the Sugar Grove Free Library Book Club, they have a new book each month. For August the book we are reading is “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn. We will meet and discuss the selection on Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

The community of Sugar Grove will once again hold its Outdoor Movie Nights at the Sugar Grove Community Park on the last Friday of each month.
Family movies are played on an inflatable movie screen starting at dusk. Come along and bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and snacks and enjoy the show. Each event is sponsored by the Warren County Council of Tourism and the Sugar Grove Borough Council.
The schedule for the remainder of the summer is 8/30/13 – Hotel Transylvania and 9/27/13 – Secret of the Wings. Mark your calendars and plan to come on out and join in a fun night in the park.

The Community Lunches in the area continue to be well attended. All lunches begin at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend any or all of the area community lunches.
Each month lunch is held on the first Friday of the month at the Mission Covenant Church at the corner of Matthews Run and Jackson Run roads. On the second Thursday of each month at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church located at the corner of Race and Jamestown streets in the center of town. On the third Wednesday of the month at the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church located in Chandlers Valley. Everyone is invited to attend.
Vacation Bible School
The Sugar Grove United Methodist Church will be holding its 2013 Vacation Bible School on Thursday Aug. 22 and Friday, Aug. 23 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and then on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The theme this year is “Everywhere Fun Fair”. We will learn what the Bible shows us about how to be a good neighbor. There will be lunch and some fun fair games after the morning classes on Saturday.
The Farmers Open
Sign up now for the Darrell Johnson and Jeff Lindell Memorial Farmer’s Open Golf Tournament. This year the tournament will be held on Oct.10 with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. at Jackson Valley Country Club. The cost is $40 per person for 18 holes, golf cart, and lunch at the turn. This is a 4-person scramble.
Call Jeff Savko at Jackson Valley 489-7803 by Oct. 7 to make your reservations. There will be prizes, special hole events, and more so get your teams together and register early.
The Sportman’s Bash
The Lander Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Sportman’s Bash on Sept. 21. Doors will open at 11 a.m. There will be free food and drink and drawings beginning at noon for guns, bows, gps trail cameras, and more. There will be more than 80 spins on the prize wheel all day long. The cost is $20 and that includes chances on the prizes.

CVCC Spaghetti Dinner
The Chandlers Valley Community Center will be having a spaghetti dinner on Aug. 29. The event will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until all supplies are gone. The cost is just a donation and will feature spaghetti with sauce, garlic bread sticks and dessert.
All proceeds will go toward the community center building. Come on out and enjoy a good meal with your community neighbors.
The Sugar Grove location of the Second Harvest Food Pantry was held on Saturday, Aug. 17. Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help with the distribution. It was a record-setting give-away with a total of 21,360 pounds, over 11 tons of food supplies, that were distributed to over 200 families in the area.
The next delivery will be in October.
Lottsville Heritage Days
The Lottsville Heritage Day Celebration will be held on Sept. 14. This will be the 8th year that the event will be held at the Freehold Township building from noon until 3 p.m. Bring an auction item and a dish to pass. Meat, beverages and table service will be provided.
