Fralick defends Rec softball title

Two in a row.

Fralick Chiropractic won its second straight Richard T. Betts Rec Modified Softball League championship on Wednesday at Betts Park with a 12-1 win over Betts.

Betts defeated Nic-L-Inn to make the finals, but lost in the first game after a five-run first started things for Fralick. Chris Maggio’s two-run homer started the scoring in the bottom of the first and Josh Melquist added a two-run single.

Phil Hind, Kyle Grey, Asa Johnson and Adam McKinley had three hits each for Fralick, with a group that played together in the Mayville, N.Y. modified-pitch league before moving to the Warren league six years ago. Maggio added two hits in the 19-hit attack.

Don Cummings had three hits for Betts and Preston McMeans added two in the loss. Betts scored a run in the first then stranded nine runners the rest of the way.

Joe Conti scattered nine hits as the winning pitcher for Fralick, which won its last eight games and 11 out of its last 12 in the title run.

Prior to Fralick titles in 2012 and 2013, Nic-L-Inn had won two straight titles. Before that, Betts had won 14 straight league titles and 20 out of 21.

Earlier in the evening, Blair defeated Nic-L-Inn, 8-4, in the loser’s bracket final. Brandon Schott fell a home run short of the cycle, while Jason Rafalski had three hits of his own, including a double. Jeff Eaton, Casey Moyer, Andy Hanks, and Darren Cummings each had two hits for Betts. Nic-L-Inn’s Ryan Lemon had three hits in the loss.
