Gary Sleeman

Gary “Gig” Sleeman of Sebring, Florida passed away on August 7, 2013 after a courageous year long battle with cancer.

Born June 12, 1947 to the late John W. and Gertrude (Frey) Sleeman he spent most of his life in the Clarendon, Pa. area moving to Florida in 2012. After graduating from Warren Area High School in 1965 he joined the United States Air Force in April of 1966, serving during the Viet Nam era. He returned to Clarendon area in the mid 70’s and retired from the North Warren State Hospital.

He married Lorraine Hawk, the love of his life, on May 31, 2005 at their home in Stoneham.

After his family, Gig loved the outdoors best and was an excellent marksman, enjoying hunting with his brothers, wife and a long list of friends. A long time member of the Kalbfus Club he enjoyed competing in Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays. Gig also belonged to the Clarendon VFW and the American Legion in Warren. A great story teller, Gig soon made everyone he met a friend and his love for young people and animals, especially dogs, made him a memorable person. He touched so many lives.

Besides his wife Lorraine, he is survived by two brothers, Tom (Margret) Sleeman of Warren, Edward (Barbara) Sleeman of Kane, one brotherinlaw, Tom (Robin) Beck, York Pa., and sister, Linda (Gene) Jones of Brocton, NY, sisterinlaw Ruth (Ron’Hoot’) Ecklund, Sebring FL., Edie, (John) Gardner, Scandia, Pa., a daughter Tonya and two granddaughters of North Carolina, and these step children, Michelle Poston, Mike (Angie)Reynolds, Marc (Tammy) Anderson, close cousins, John E. Sleeman of Beaverdam, VA and Judy Barner of Sheffield, PA, special nephews, Brian Olson of Mara, Pa, Garrett Sleeman of Clarendon, Sean Sleeman of Pittsburgh and Chad Melillo of Brockport, Step grand children, Richele, Samantha, Kyle, Ashley, Dylan, Drew, and Tessa, step great grandchildren, Isabell, Zoey, and Gracelynn, numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins aunts and uncles. To many children, related or not, he was lovingly known as “Grandpa Gig”. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Edward and Lena Frey paternal grandparents Edward T and Martha Sleeman, a nephew, Matthew Jones and niece Sonya Olson.

No visitation will be observed and a private service will be held for the family at a later time.
